Book Posters

Books are normally divided in to separate pages of text that are observed word by word. The reader flicks from one page to the next. The design of a book front cover expresses what the book is about. The actual typography within books contains very little expression, rightly so, all designed for the clarity of reading.

Book posters were designed to release all of the text into a whole image of expression. Freeing it from the limitations of the book to create a new typographical expression to the words and language.

Book posters I have to confess is a gimmick, a game. Viewed from a distance like a book cover and then as then differently as a viewer moves closer. The observer then can see that the overall image is all made up of words and contains the whole book is one visual bang.

Such a quick visual bang is also an opportunity to work with the typography to express the books theme, emotion, or idea. Allowing the reader to understand the book without reading a single word.

Romeo & Juliet

I wanted to take the tragic love story of Romeo & Juliet and represent the whole piece of language at once. To take the restrictiveness of the physical book away. The observer initially looking at the piece from a distance will see the book without words but grasp its tragic resonance and dark atmosphere, before getting closer to see the interaction of the characters in the story, again without the need to read the words. To stand back beyond language and see language from a new perspective. I have enjoyed watching peoples reaction when they realise that the art is made up of just words, that the whole of such a famous story is in front of them but they could not see it. The characters are coded for example Romeo & Juliet are in red with there own typeface, the Montague family are in green with there own typeface and so on.

The Cross

On the following book poster, the text of genesis was used again surrounding the Christian Cross, using a tonal difference on the typography to form the shadow of the cross.
